인공지능(AI) 열풍으로 '.ai' 도메인(인터넷 주소)를 선점하려는 움직임이 나타나고 있습니다.
인터넷 초창기 '.com' 도메인을 선점해 투기나 대여하는 사례가 빈번했는데 '.ai' 도메인에서도 이 같은 현상이 재현되고 있다고 합니다.
도메인 호스팅 전문기업 후이즈에 따르면 지난달 기준 '.ai' 도메인을 사용 중인 인터넷 사이트는 14만 7844개로 집계되었습니다. 지난해 11월 12만 7000여건에 머물렀지만 챗GPT의 등장을 계기로 AI에 대한 관심이 폭발적으로 커지면서 등록 사이트도 빠르게 늘어나고 있는 것으로 풀이됩니다.
'.ai'는 마치 한국의 '.kr', 중국 '.cn'과 같이, 원래는 서인도 제도의 영국령 앵귈라(Anguilla)의 국가 코드 도메인이었습니다. 그러다 2010년대부터 AI 기술 관련 기업과 단체들이 '.ai' 도메인을 구입해 사용하는 경우가 늘기 시작했습니다. '.ai'가 인공지능(Artificial Intelligence)의 영어 약자 'AI'와 우연히 겹치면서 '.ai'의 도메인에 대한 선호가 높아진 탓입니다.
한국에서도 '.ai' 도메인을 쓰고 있는 회사들이 다수 있는데요, 카카오는 'kakao.ai'를 자회사 카카오엔터프라이즈의 AI 서비스 소개 홈페이지로 활용 중이고 AI 스타트업 업스테이지(upstage.ai)와 AI 반도체 기업 퓨리오사 AI(furiosa.ai)도 이 도메인을 사용하고 있습니다.
'.ai' 선호 현상으로 개인들이 도메인을 선점하려는 움직임도 감지되고 있는 상황입니다. 'daum.ai' 도메인은 현재 포털 '다음'을 운영하는 카카오가 아닌 개인이 소유하고 있습니다.
인터넷 브라우저 주소창에 'daum.ai'을 입력하면 마이크로소프트(MS) 빙으로 연결되는데, 이 도메인은 2021년 2월 김 모씨가 취득한 걸로 그는 지난달 당근마켓에 이 도메인을 14억 3000만원에 판매한다는 글을 올리기도 했습니다. 이와 관련해 카카오 관계자는 "daum.ai 도메인 소유권이 개인에게 있다는 점을 인지하고 있다"라며 "사업에 필요한 도메인을 확보하고 있으며, 향후 필요시 관련 도메인을 구매 검토할 예정"이라고 말했습니다.
업계에서는 이 같은 행위가 유명 기업, 단체명이나 상품명 등의 인터넷 도메인을 영리 목적으로 선점하는 '사이버스쿼팅(Cybersquatting)'으로 볼 소지가 있다며 우려를 표하고 있습니다. 현재 네이버 .ai 도메인(naver.ai)은 '로봇공학과 AI 포털'이라는 이름의 우크라이나 사이트로 연결되고, 'lg.ai'에 접속하면 중국인 소유자가 '구매하려면 연락 달라'는 메모와 함께 수백 개의 도메인 목록을 나열한 사이트가 등장합니다.
'ai 열풍'이라는 게 허튼말은 아닌 것 같습니다.

Due to the '.ai' preference, individuals are also being detected to preoccupy the domain. The 'daum.ai ' domain is currently owned by an individual, not Kakao, who runs the portal 'Next'. If you enter "daum.ai " in the Internet browser address bar, it will be connected to Microsoft Bing, which was acquired by Kim in February 2021, and he posted on the carrot market last month that he would sell the domain for KRW 1.43 billion. The industry is concerned that such behavior could be seen as "cybersquatting" that preoccupies Internet domains such as famous companies, group names, and product names for profit. Currently, NAVER the ai domain (naver.ai ) is linked to a Ukrainian site named 'Robot Engineering and AI Portal' and  when you access "Lg.ai ", a site appears listing hundreds of domains with a note from a Chinese owner saying "please contact me if you want to buy ".
