Google has launched a counterattack in the generative artificial intelligence (AI) competition led by OpenAI and Microsoft (MS) coalition.
Google unveiled an interactive AI 'Bard' based on Language Model for Dialog Applications (LaMDA), which has been veiled for the past two years. Like other AI chatbots, Bard can help with coding as well as answering math problems and writing. The biggest difference with Google Bard is that it pulls information from the web.
Shoreline Amphitheater at Google Campus in Mountain View, California, on the 10th (local time). Google's exclusive open-air theater was filled with 4,100 participants from all over the world with colorful necklaces such as red, yellow, green, and blue.
It is the first time in four years since the pandemic that Google has hosted its annual developer conference (I/O) here.
Participants' attention was directed to the latest large-scale language model (LLM) Palm 2 (PaLM2) released by Google against open AI.
PaLM2 has learned more than 100 languages and has strengths in coding as well as advanced mathematical operations and reasoning.
There are 540 billion parameters that are highly associated with the performance of the model, three times the GPT3 (175 billion) of OpenAI.
For GPT4, the exact parameter size was not disclosed.
"We are at an interesting inflection point seven years after we started our journey as an AI leader," said Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who appeared on stage in jeans and gray knitwear. "We will not only enhance their productivity and creativity but also present responsible AI through generative AI."
What drew attention by far was Google's interactive AI Bad, which learns and answers in Korean, and Google released Korean and Japanese versions following English! He explained that he would expand to 40 languages in the future.
Regarding the reason for releasing Korean and Japanese first, Google said, "We considered that we can continuously listen to and learn user feedback," adding, "In the case of Japanese, it works well enough to get an A level on the Japanese proficiency test."
CEO Pichai demonstrated the ability to freely cross Korean and English, including the reason for code modification in Korean when an engineer at Google headquarters modified and commented in collaboration with a colleague in Seoul, South Korea.
Page Bailey, Google Product Manager, stressed, "MS's GitHub Copilot provides all the experience of coding, from code writing to security, vulnerability checking, and debugging, if code writing is possible as one of the extensions."
Google's search engine has also been transformed into a "SGE (Search Generative Experience)" equipped with a Bard.
When asked, "Which do you recommend when you take your three-year-old on a trip, Bryce Canyon, Nevada, or Archer's National Park, Utah?" Bard responded with an image, saying they were both child-friendly but differed in detail.
The shopping search function has also become kinder. When asked to recommend an electric bicycle that can be used for commuting about 5km round trip, he compared three specific models and even guided them to discount information.
Google said, "We will secure space to expose advertisement-supported content," and Google's stock price closed up 4% on the same day.
Google also unveiled Gemini, a next-generation language model under development by Google DeepMind, which was recently created by the integration of Google Brain and DeepMind, making it clear that it will continue its leadership in the field of generative AI.
"It's still in its early stages, but it's showing an impressive multimodal (processing multiple forms of media, such as text and images), which we haven't seen in previous models," Pichai stressed.
Meanwhile, on this day, Google finally released its first foldable smartphone, 'Pixel Fold'! I revealed it.
It is equipped with "Tensor G2," a mobile processor developed by Google with Samsung Electronics, and has a screen size of 7.8 inches when unfolded and 5.8 inches when folded, compared to the Samsung Galaxy Z-Fold 4. Prices start at $1,799 (about 2.37 million won).
And I'm excited to finally be able to use the Bard properly.
